Successful School Turnaround: Strategies for Creating Engaging School and Classrooms

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The Urban Education Collaborative at UNC Charlotte invites proposals for presentations and workshops for the 5th meeting of PEOPE Conference at the UNC Charlotte Center City Campus in Charlotte, NC on October 28, 2019.

PROPOSAL SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

• Presentation titles should clearly describe the context of the presentation or workshop and must be limited to 10 words.
• Please indicate which conference strand your presentation supports.

REGISTRATION

All presenters whose presentations are accepted must REGISTER for the conference by Friday, August 23, 2019 in order to be included on the program. Conference officials cannot pay honorariums, travel, lodging or any other additional costs associated with the conference.

NOTIFICATION OF ACCEPTANCE

All proposals will receive a notification of acceptance. Conference officials will officially correspond with the lead presenter. If the proposal is accepted, the lead presenter will receive an email with logistics and program details. It is the lead presenter’s responsibility to communicate all conference information in a timely manner to any and all co-presenters.

CONFERENCE STRANDS

The following strands embrace Successful School Turnaround Strategies that will position urban K-12 schools and teachers to pursue extraordinary outcomes in public education. PROPOSALS MUST SELECT ONE OF THE STRANDS BELOW AS THE PRIMARY FOCUS OF THE PRESENTATION. Selection of proposals will be made on the relevance to these strands. Additionally, it is important that all presentations are interactive, engaging, and practical for conference attendees.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT AND DISCIPLINE: This conference strand focuses on solution oriented research, policies, and practices that will enhance effective classroom management and disciplinary practices.
COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS: This strand supports best practices that support programming that ensure urban students graduate high school and are college and career ready.
CULTURALLY SUSTAINING TEACHING: Proposals in this conference strand support culturally sustaining research and innovative lessons/activities that are committed to student achievement, critical consciousness, and academic rigor.
EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION: This conference strand highlights developmentally appropriate practices that are dedicated to quality social, emotional, physical, and cognitive preschool experiences.
PARENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: This strand supports practices and strategies that will enhance the development of teacher knowledge and skills on how to effectively gain parental support and develop community partnerships.
POLICY AND LEADERSHIP: This strand highlights the importance for educational policy and leadership as related to the analyses of global, national, regional, state, and local educational trends and reforms. In addition, this strand supports best practices for successful principals and school leaders in urban districts.
SCHOOL TURNAROUND: This strand highlights school turnaround solutions that work for low-performing schools. Additionally, this strand supports best practices for schools to begin and sustain successful school turnaround efforts.
SOCIAL JUSTICE IN URBAN EDUCATION: Proposals in this conference strand focus on solution oriented practices that deal with issues of Office Referrals, school-to-prison pipeline, unequal rigorous course offerings and resource distribution, unfair treatment of individuals with differing race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, etc., as well as policies and practices that support marginalization.
STEAM: This conference strand supports teachers, administrators, graduate students and faculty who are interested in current research, innovative lessons/activities, and further training as Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics educators.
